Which Third Wheel Couple Are You?

The biggest relationship lesson from every episode + find your queer relationship match

When I first dreamed up Third Wheel, I knew I wanted to make a queer reality show unlike any I’d seen before—one that showcases relationships that are thriving, even amidst the messy, awkward, tender parts of being human.

Six episodes later, I’m struck by just how much each couple taught me. Every relationship brought its own language, rituals, tensions, and ways of finding one another again after a rupture. So, as we close out our first season, I wanted to look back at the lessons about intimacy, communication, and queer love that have changed the way I want to give and receive love.

Below I break down who is likely to resonate with each episode, so you can find the couple whose dynamic feels the most like your own…I hope you enjoy watching this show that one viewer said “cured homophobia”!

Episode 1: Liv & Candice

Lesson: You don’t have to rush a relationship just because the feelings are big. Sometimes letting a relationship simmer is exactly what allows safety + trust to grow.

This episode is great for:

  • Polyamorous folks + the poly-curious — Liv + Candice have been polyamorous from day one, and their relationship offers a beautiful example of how non-monogamy can create space for love to develop without immediately needing to define, escalate or contain it.
  • Folks tempted to define a relationship immediately – you can be completely enamored with someone without immediately turning that feeling into a label, commitment or next step. You can just let it simmer.
  • Anyone in their first queer relationship – when falling for someone opens up possibilities for your life and changes your identity.

Episode 2: Caroline & Ceilidh

Lesson: Lasting love isn’t about staying the same! It’s about continuing to choose each other as you change (which, guess what, you will!). Caroline + Ceilidh show how a relationship can grow with you when you're curious and willing to support each other without keeping score.

This episode is great for:

  • Long-distance couples — especially anyone learning how to stay connected across distance or learning how to adjust to living near one another for the first time.
  • Couples who’ve grown up together — and are navigating how to keep choosing each other as your identities, needs, bodies + lives evolve.
  • Anyone rethinking what intimacy “should” look like — especially when sex drive, medication, energy or life stages shift.

Episode 3: Ken & Tim

Lesson: Repair is often in the small, consistent moments, not grand gestures. Even when old wounds pull partners apart, these kind, everyday gestures are a way of saying, "I love you and I'm not going anywhere".

This episode is great for:

  • Couples who get caught in a repeating cycle — especially if one partner’s fear or distress leaves the other feeling helpless, creating a cycle where partners end up pulling further apart.
  • Anyone learning how past trauma can show up inside present-day love — including moments when stress, overwhelm or a sense of not belonging can make it difficult to receive the care your partner is trying to offer.
  • Anyone who’s estranged from family — and has found, or hopes to find, a new sense of belonging and support through their partner and their partner’s family.

Episode 4: J & Quise

Lesson: The differences between you aren’t always obstacles to overcome…they can actually be some of your relationship’s greatest strengths.

This episode is great for:

  • Folks in age-gap relationships — especially anyone navigating outside assumptions about what your age difference means, or discovering the unexpected ways being at different stages of life can help you both grow.
  • Anyone working on conflict + repair — particularly how to hold each other accountable, give each other room to evolve, admit when you’re wrong + find little rituals that help you come back together.
  • Couples who feel like total opposites — and want to learn how to appreciate the qualities that sometimes drive you up the wall as the very same qualities that you also love and cherish.

Episode 5: Rhiannon & Nick

Lesson: It’s entirely possible for the connection between partners to get buried under the logistics of everyday life. Staying close can look like intentionally making the space (and time) to notice and prioritize one another.

This episode is great for:

  • Anyone navigating a new phase of partnership — like moving in together or getting married, and figuring out how to stay connected as the relationship becomes more intertwined.
  • Folks who want to be more intentional about intimacy — from protecting date night from life admin to actually scheduling physical intimacy instead of waiting for it to magically happen.
  • Bisexual folks in “straight-passing” relationships — especially anyone navigating biphobia, queer belonging + the feeling that their relationship makes their bisexuality somehow less visible or valid.

Episode 6: Alice & Sierra

Lesson: A secure relationship doesn’t require losing yourself in another person. It can be something you actively choose while maintaining your independence, friendships, community + sense of self.

This episode is great for:

  • Anyone asking themselves if they should U-Haul — or wondering how to slow down when the chemistry is really good.
  • Folks who are curious about secure attachment — especially what security can actually look and feel like in everyday partnership.
  • Anyone trying to balance partnership + independence — and build a love that adds to their friendships, passions + community rather than replacing them.
